Nobody
can deny that the back bone of
the arts in Bali is the village,
as betrayed by the branches of
the arts practised therein.

Fine
arts such as painting enjoy healthy
development in the villages, carried
on by artists whose taksu is strong
indeed, such as I Gusti Nyoman
Lempad in Ubud, or Mangku Mura
of Kamasan, famous for his wayang
painting, and also from Ubud there
is Cokot,the sculptor. What about
traditional music and dance ?
There are names like I Gusti Nyoman
Panji Gede, I Wandres and Gede
Manik from Buleleng, Ida Bagus
Boda, I nyoman Kaler, I Wayan
Lotring, I Made regog, I Made
Grebag in villages of Badung and
Denpasar, I Mario from Tabanan,
I Nyoman Kakul from Batuan, the
partnership of Wayan Griya and
Made Kredek from Gianyar. And
that's not to mention the the
star of Gambuh, Arja, Topeng and
other from Gianyar and Klunkung,
or the puppeteers Ida Bagus Ngurah
from Buduk village-Badung, and
Grayam from Sukawati-Giayar. and
we should also make room
for the artist priest the late
Ida Pedanda Mande Sidemen Of Sanur-
a Bali style mason and spesialist
on literature who chose to live
life in a humble manner. Anyway
that is the past which leaves
to us now the remaining artist.

In
short the arts are very definitely
alive in the villages and in the
banjars. And there's a certain
phenomenon that's particularly
interesting in the performaning
arts. In the development of Gong
Kebyar a competition is held throug
the Bali arts Festival, involving
graduates from Bali's art academics
- STSI and SMKI ( formerly know
as KOKAR, and more recently called
SMK 3 Sukawati, Giayar) who are
accompanied by those self
taught artists.
An achievement which has filled
everybody with pride, since we
know that these academices employ
teaching staff pooled trom the
very best of Bali's artist often
natural talents from the villages
who know the importace of taksu.
What can we deduce from the situation?
There is an educational infrastructure
in work here to ensure the unintterupted
continuation of the arts. Teaches
and lecture of these schools are
taken from the natural talented
artists from villages.
Beginning with the high taksu
natural talents of the villages
these skills are spread far and
wide through institution such
as SMK 3 ans STSI, who graduates
return again to the villages to
bolster the art of respective
regions. This is all in line with
the manifestos of repective schools,
whose alummi in preserving the
art, play a none too small role
in developing the art from the
village level right through to
regency, or even provinvi level.
